The most beautiful birthday present I ever received was the one which I got from my beloved Eva, a wonderful Kaffir lime tree.
I like this small tree so much and I am trying my very best to make it survive the harsh European winter. The leaves of this wonderful tree are so aromatic and intense, their taste cannot be substituted by the common lime. I still plan to cook all the typical Thai curry dishes with Kaffir lime leaves. Meanwhile I enjoy one of the few drinks presented in Death & Co´s book Modern Classic Cocktails which go with Kaffir lime leaves, like the fantastic sweet, intense and cytrusy Sunset Gun created by Joaquín Simó (2011).
2 Fresh Kaffir Lime Leaves, 2 ounces Gin, 1/4 ounce Falernum, 1 ounce Lime Juice, 1/2 ounce Orgeat, garnish: 1 Fresh Kaffir Lime Leaf
Muddle the Kaffir lime leaves in a shaker. Add the remaining ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a Kaffir lime leaf.
