“Here is our Old Fashioned representative, back to the 1806 definition of the cocktail as ´spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters.´ We´ve frozen the water and multiplied the spirits. Since a proper Old Fashioned is made with good old rye, and rye can have a bready characteristic, let´s emphasize that with aquavit´s caraway basis and sweetened with the je ne sais quoi of Parfait Amour. For mouthfeel there is the roundness of Gum Syrup rather than mere mortal sugar“, Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry write in their wonderful book The Dead Rabbit Drinks Manual about the Gladstone, inspired by William Schmidt, The Flowing Bowl (1892).
1/4 ounce Gum Syrup, 3 dashes Absinthe, 3 dashes Angostura Aromatic Bitters, 1/2 ounce Parfait Amour, 3/4 ounce Aquavit, 2 ounces Rittenhouse Rye, garnish: Lemon Peel
Stir ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice. Strain into a glass and twist the lemon peel over the glass (the recipe suggests to discard the lemon peel, I preferred to drop it in).
