The Hanky Panky is a variation on the sweet martini, inasmuch as it calls for gin and sweet vermouth. But when Ada Coleman created this drink her secret ingredient was Fernet Branca, a bitter Italian digestivo.
By adding a couple of dashes of this herbal elixir, she transformed it into a whole new drink.
“As you sip Ada´s creation, give a wistful toast to her – and to the Savoy …“, Ted Haigh writes in Vintage Spirits & Forgotten Cocktails. And this is what I am just doing right now. Cheers!
1-1/2 ounces Gin, 1-1/2 ounces Sweet Vermouth, 2 dashes Fernet Branca, garnish: Orange Peel
Stir ingredients with ice (the original recipe asks for shaking!) and strain into a cocktail glass. Twist the orange peel over the surface of the drink and drop it in.
If you like drinks like Martinez or sweet martinis this is the drink of your choice. “The orange twist is the key to revealing the black magic [the Fernet Branca] in this lovely cocktail“, Ted Haigh writes. I agree, the hint of orange flavor makes this drink perfect!
