“I love it when one of our regulars asks us to create a cocktail on the spot based on crazy criteria – and it´s even better when we we can pull off a decent drink on the first try.
One night Avery Glasser, the man behind Bittermens bitters and one of the bar´s original regulars, asked me to make him a drink that contained all of his favorite ingredients. The problem was that he likes a lot of weird shit.
But I gave it a shot, splitting both the base spirit and its modifiers, and it resulted in a surprisingly balanced drink.“, writes Phil Ward (2008) in Death & Co´s Modern Classic Cocktails. And so the Shattered Glasser was invented.
1 oz. Reposado Tequila, 1/2 oz. Mezcal, 3/4 oz. Carpano Antica, 1/2 oz. Batavia Arrack, 1/4 oz. Allspice Dram, 1/4 oz. Benedictine, 2 dashes Xocolatl Mole Bitters (sorry, Avery, I do not have the Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters, I have used Bitter Truth)
Stir ingredients with ice and strain into a coupe. No garnish.
There is a perfect balance between the spicy Allspice Dram and Batavia Arrack, the smoky bite of the Mezcal, the sweet herbal Benedictine and the sweet chocolate aftertaste. Awesome!
