The Best Year

I started to read Beachbum Berry Remixed A Gallery of Tiki Drinks enthusiastically. So this month´s Mixology Monday theme “Pineapple” hosted by Bartending Notes comes perfectly right!

mxmologoMy choice of drink is The Best Year by V. Bobby Batugo. It won the 1975 U.S. Bartender´s Guild National Championship. I am sure that my sweetheart Eva who has made this year to The Best Year of my life will enjoy this price-winning drink too!


3 oz. Pineapple Juice, 3/4 oz. Licor 43, 3/4 oz. Blue Curaçao, 3/4 oz. Rose´s Lime Juice, 2 and 1/4 oz. Vodka, 8 oz. Crushed Ice, garnish: Pineapple Chunk, Cocktail Cherry, Mint Sprig


Blend ingredients for up to 30 seconds. Pour unstrained into a tulip or other glass adding more crushed ice to fill. Garnish with pineapple, cherry and  mint sprig.

    Ordinarily I would shy away from these ingredients, but that little historical tidbit caught my fancy. I imagine that making a vodka-based drink in 1975 was rather like making an amaro-based drink in 2010; daring and unusual.

      I often wonder what impression such for us often strange-looking drinks had on the people at those times. I agree, a vodka-based tropcial drink drew attention for sure!

    I am a huge fan of bobby’s work and had been to the establishment (Tip’s restaurant). The best year was excellent, but my preferences were for the “Lapu Lapu” and the “Casa d’Oro”. We are searching desperately for the recipes, please let me know if you find them. They’re worth the trouble.

    Edit: In Beachbum Berry Remixed I have found the recipe of Chief Lapu Lapu:
    “3 oz. Orange Juice, 2 oz. Lemon Juice, 1 oz. Sugar Syrup, 1 oz. Passionfruit Syrup, 1 and 1/2 oz. Dark Jamaican Rum, 1 and 1/2 oz. Light Puertorican Rum. Shake well with ice cubes and pour into a large snifter. Add more ice to fill.”
